24/7 emergency care – access when it matters most
Breaking down barriers to accessible healthcare and meeting neighbors where they are. Baptist Memorial’s Operation Outreach program is bringing trusted, compassionate care directly to the community.
Access to health care isn’t just about location. It’s about trust, compassion and meeting people where they are. That’s exactly what Baptist Operation Outreach provides every day across Memphis.
Now one of the largest health care providers for people without permanent housing in the city, Baptist Operation Outreach has served more than 500 individuals this year through its mobile clinic. Program director Janice Taylor, who has led the effort for over 20 years, says partnerships with churches, shelters and community groups help spread the word and make care accessible.
The mobile clinic offers a wide range of services, including sick visits, physicals, immunizations, diabetes education, mental health care, and screenings for STDs and HIV. Vision and dental care are available by appointment. Patients are welcome to walk up or schedule an appointment, and adults as well as children ages four and up can be seen. Once someone visits, they are connected to a consistent provider who can arrange labs, prescriptions and follow-ups at no cost.
If additional testing is needed, Baptist Operation Outreach schedules it and provides transportation. The goal is to remove every barrier possible, from cost to transportation to comfort. Funding comes from Baptist Memorial Health Care Foundation, Christ Community Health Services, Tennessee’s Health Care Safety Net, HRSA and private donors.
Beyond health care, the program also supports spiritual and emotional well-being. At the Tree of Faith, Hope and Love luncheon last year, 170 guests enjoyed a holiday meal and received backpacks filled with winter essentials.
According to the Community Alliance for the Homeless, nearly 1,300 individuals in Memphis were without permanent housing in 2023. Baptist Operation Outreach meets these neighbors with dignity and care every step of the way.
