Ascension Saint Thomas Heart turned a routine postpartum visit into life‑saving care, catching a hidden heart defect early and helping Britain Games protect her health for years to come.

When Britain Games went in for a routine postpartum checkup at Ascension Saint Thomas in Nashville, she never expected it would uncover a serious heart defect. A mother of two with a family history of heart disease, Britain had long experienced symptoms like fluttering, dizziness and high blood pressure. After speaking with her OB-GYN, she was referred to Dr. Hannah Fish-Trotter, a cardiologist at Ascension Saint Thomas Heart who specializes in postpartum care.

Dr. Fish-Trotter diagnosed a heart defect that, combined with Britain’s family risk, could have led to major complications. Early diagnosis gave Britain the opportunity to begin treatment right away. She is now taking daily medication to reduce her cholesterol and prevent future heart problems. Britain believes the pregnancy helped bring the issue to light in time to act.

Dr. Fish-Trotter explains that certain pregnancy-related complications, including preeclampsia and gestational diabetes, can increase a woman’s risk of cardiovascular disease. With the right care, many of these risks can be identified and managed early. Ascension Saint Thomas Heart is focused on helping women understand these risks and protect their long-term health.

Cardiovascular disease is often associated with older adults, but for women with a history of pregnancy complications, the risks may start earlier. Providers in Tennessee are encouraging more conversations between OB-GYNs, cardiologists and patients to catch these issues before they become serious.

Britain’s experience shows how essential postpartum care can be. At Ascension Saint Thomas Heart, personalized care and early detection are giving women the tools to stay healthy for years to come.
